Nelson Tagoona: Overcoming personal struggles to help pioneer a new type of music

Nelson Tagoona grew up in Baker Lake, a community in Nunavut with a population of roughly 2,000 people. Now he takes the stage in front of upwards of 15,000 people.

Tagoona has helped pioneer “throat boxing.”  It’s a mix of traditional Inuit throat singing and beat boxing.

The one-of-a-kind musician is known for his inspirational messages he shares with youth in Nunavut and across Canada.

The 23-year-old has played Aboriginal Day Live three times and is about to play with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Tagoona is also a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
