Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre says it is about time to move toward reconciliation with Indigenous people.

And it starts with the city’s new flag and coat of arms that will recognize their contribution to the city.

A white pine, which represents the Great Tree of Peace, is now at the centre of the French, English, Scottish and Irish coat of arms.

“I am proud of the city for doing this,” said Chief Christine Zacharie-Deom of Kahnawake First Nation.

Ghislain Picard said the move brings hope.

“The ceremony today and the raising of the flag is giving me hope,” said Picard, chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador.

“Hope that the connection to this territory, the history connection of our people, as well as the contemporary connection of our people to the city is finally acknowledged and recognized.”
