A festival in Calgary, Alberta meant to bring community members together has instead started a social media storm that is forcing event organizers to come up with a new name.

Circle the Wagons is a food festival that is scheduled to start in September.

“Circle the wagons? How is that not racist? How is that not racist in the context of reconciliation? asked Lee Deranger.

While the festival is still scheduled to go ahead, it won’t be using the same name.

“We are now enlightened to the understanding that this name is offensive and are changing it,” said festival co-organizer Jim Button. “While we don’t have a name yet. It is going to take us some time to change all of our marketing materials, social media handles.”

Your article fails to mention that this event is paid for by the Petroleum Industry as well as Justin Trudeau’s Canada 150 fund.

First Nations need to show up to support the event and educate on why the name even if it is changed is so offensive to us

They circled wagons to protect themselves and horses from predators. It also created a small paddock for the horses. Stop thinking everything is about you. This is a nonissue. Choose your battles more wisely. Also, it is historical fact that Natives would attack settlers, so don’t be trying to change history or deny it.

That is the historical truth of it, however Westerns had cowboys yelling, “circle the wagons” when being attack by Natives because the writers and directora thought it sounded cool.
Another historical facts is that settlers would attack Natives; no one is denying either fact here.
