On Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, medical marijuana is quickly becoming the new tobacco trade.
At least eight stores have opened in the last couple of years since the federal Liberals first started talking about legalizing it.
But in the eyes of Canada and the band council, what these stores are doing is illegal.
Here is a statement from the Tyendinaga council.
“According to the current laws, only manufacturers and distributors of medical marijuana under the regulatory regime of Health Canada are legal,” the statement said.
Others feel the Mohawk of Tyendinaga need to draw up their own laws, away from Canada’s laws.
Including a grower APTN has agreed to call Brian, to protect his identity and location.
“It’s none of Canada’s freaking business what we’re doing on sacred Mohawk territory, okay? We are a sovereign nation we don’t have to answer to Canada and we won’t.”
