A controversial exploration project is set to start this summer along Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories.

For the past decade, interest has grown from oil companies who seek high-quality sand.

But Tlicho Dene members say the land the companies are interested in is on their traditional territory – and they don’t want any development there.

“I know that mines are essential for the economy of my government,” said Zemie Daniels. “But, we already do have some mines inside of our Tlicho lands, and the reason why we don’t want this piece of land to be destroyed is because there is no other beach with white coloured sand and the area around here is pretty beautiful.”
