Maliseet hold time immemorial event to work towards new relationship with Canada

While many Canadians celebrated Canada 150, the Maliseet in New Brunswick did something different.

They held a time immemorial event.

The goal was to educate and raise awareness of Indigenous issues.

And find ways to improve the relationship with Canada in the future.

The message was perfectly clear.

“There’s not going to be reconciliation unless our people are involved in the decision of our future,” said Wolastoqiyik Grandmother Alma Brook. “We have to be involved this time.”

I think the sentiment was very fair and the event very respectful. That’s the only way we are going to move toward reconciliation. They are asking for mutual respect and I believe, giving it.
