Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he will remove the name that has adorned the building where his office is located.

Since 1889 the building at the southeast corner of Wellington and Metcalfe streets has been known as the Langevin building.

It was named after Sir Hector-Louis Langevin who is considered a Father of Confederation and a cabinet minister in the Sir John A MacDonald’s cabinet.

Langevin is also known as an architect of the residential school system that forced an estimated 150,000 children from their homes and into state-run schools.

The schools decimated families and communities. Many have never recovered.

But on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decided it was time his office was not named after a proponent of such a diabolical program.

“We will remove this name,” said Trudeau. “And what was once Langevin Block will now officially and practically become the Office of the Prime Minister and the Privy Council.”

Trudeau used Aboriginal Day to also announce a new space for First Nation, Métis and Inuit across from Parliament Hill, and a new name for Ab Day.
