The Bimose Tribal Council has found a winning formula for education – one that has been so successful it led to the opening of a school on a remote reserve on the Lake of the Woods.
It’s a big deal – one that means children don’t have to go away for school – and the sounds of them at play has elders smiling.
“Two generations of students have gone from K to 12 without living in the community,” said Chief Kimberley Sandy-Kasprik. “And so our Elders told us that we need to put a stop to that. Our children need to grow up in our community. They need to be a part of the community. They need to know where they are from. They need to walk on the land.”
