The federal government continued its recent flurry of signing agreements with Indigenous organizations. On Thursday, it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Inuit women’s organization Pauktuutit.

Part of the agreement includes a meeting with Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett once a year and $900,000 for a 36-month survey of Inuit men and boys on how best to reduce violence against Inuit women.

“Because a lot of times we’re lumped in with First Nations. We’re very different. We have very different realities than first Nations,” said Pauktuutit President Rebecca Kudloo. “For instance, if government puts out money for shelters on reserve, we lose out.”

The survey will also examine other issues that contribute to violence in the north.
