The community of Picton, Ontario 200 km east of Toronto is now home to the first Downie, Wenjack legacy room.

Inspired by the work of a group of grade seven and eight students in the local school, a bookstore converted a place called the Downie Legacy room named after the lead singer of the Tragically Hip.

It was Downie who made national headlines by talking about Chaney Wenjack, a First Nation boy who died while trying to escape residential school and returning home.

“What a perfect way to start this conversation to launch a legacy room,” said student D’ari Lisle. “Engage the community, in that launch and then have some kids from the community you know host the first event and start the conversation.”
