A Winnipeg judge has ruled that Brett Overby, 30, will remain behind bars as he awaits trial.

The decision came Thursday after Overby’s bail hearing that took place Monday.

During the hearing, details surrounding Wood’s death were revealed for the first time. A publication ban prevents APTN from reporting thoese details.

Overby is charged with second-degree murder in connection to Wood’s homicide. He has been in custody since April when police found Wood’s DNA in his home.

As Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Sadie Bond read her decision, Overby showed little emotion.

Friends and family of the accused were on hand for the decision. His girlfriend broke down in tears.

Wood went missing last August while visiting Winnipeg with her family from their home community of Bunibonibee Cree Nation. She was last seen leaving the hotel the family was staying at.

Wood’s body was found late last week in a field just outside Winnipeg by a local landowner examining his crops.

Winnipeg Police Service say she had been there since late August.

Wood’s parents, George and Melinda Wood, were in the city but chose not to attend the hearing. They have asked for privacy as they bring their daughter’s remains home.

A trial date has not been set.
