The Winnipeg Police Service confirmed Saturday that remains discovered in Springfield, a rural community east of Winnipeg, are those of Christine Wood.
Wood, 21, went missing 10 months ago.
A local landowner discovered remains and notified police Thursday morning.
Police received a positive identification Friday evening.
At the news conference Saturday morning, Chief Danny Smyth addressed the Wood family, who are from Bunibonibee Cree Nation, north of Winnipeg.
“To George and Melinda Wood I cannot begin to know your pain. I will ensure Christine Wood is returned home to you as soon as possible,” said Smyth.
Wood was last seen leaving a Winnipeg hotel in August 2016. She was staying in the city with her parents.
In April, police announced they had charged Brett Overby, 30, with second-degree murder in connection with Wood’s death.
At the time police had not located her body. Police said there was enough forensic evidence found in his North End home to charge him.
Police will not confirm the cause of death but said she did not die of natural causes.
Overby’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 5.
