‘This is an easy one’ Indigenous MPs leave politics aside to lobby for name change on Prime Minister’s office

Four Indigenous members of parliament from both the Liberals and NDP held a news conference Thursday in Ottawa to ask the government to change the name of the building that houses the prime minister’s working office and the privy council of Canada.

That building, called the Langevin block, is named after Hector-Louis Langevin, one of the Fathers of Confederation and the architect of the residential school system that saw tens of thousands of Indigenous children ripped from their communities and placed in state-run schools.

On the other side, Langevin also argued against the execution of Métis leader Louis Riel.
