It was a historical weekend for the Maliseet in New Brunswick.

For the first time since the document was ratified, eight communities celebrated Treaty Day, marking the 290th anniversary of the Treaty of 1725.

The Treaty of 1725 is the first of what are now known as the Peace and Friendship Treaties with the Crown in the Maritime Provinces. To some, the treaty does more than just protect fishing and hunting rights.

For the chiefs, the focus of the celebration was not only about honouring the past; but also about moving forward as a sovereign, unified nation.
