Morning manhunt triggers Attawapiskat airport shutdown

The Attawapiskat airport was closed and the local school was put in lockdown after police launched a morning manhunt for a 36-year-old man following reports of shots being fired.

ATTAWAPISKAT, Ont.—The Attawapiskat airport was closed and the local school was put in lockdown after police launched a morning manhunt for a 36-year-old man following reports of shots being fired.

Nishnawbe-Aski Sgt. Jackie George said shortly after noon that the man had been apprehended and the lockdowns ended.

“There is no longer a concern for public safety at this time,” said George.

Police received a report at about 8:30 a.m. that a shot had been fired in the community. The man was chased by police and fled into the bush.

Attawapiskat is about 630 kilometres north of Timmins, Ont.
