People living in Labrador’s Innu and Inuit communities are hoping the province is willing to work with them to curb the number of children being taken into care.

According to documents obtained by APTN, a dispreportionate number of Indigenous children are taken from their parents compared to non-Indigenous communities.

Alcohol is one of the major contributors to having a child removed, but a lack of cultural awareness on behalf of social workers is also an issue.

Round table talks on how to solve the problem are scheduled between the leaders and provincial authorities.

APTN’s Ossie Michelin reports.
