White people mock Innu with ‘joke’ gas sniffing video

APTN National News
Innu from the Labrador community of Sheshatshiu are outraged about a video circulating on social media.

The video depicts non-Aboriginal people from nearby Happy Valley-Goose Bay mocking the Innu at some of their most vulnerable moments.

APTN’s Ossie Michelin has the story.

  1. Jennifer Davies says:

I can’t hear what they are saying and there is no captioning of the words so I am trying to figure out what they said that was racist.

  2. After sustaining a head injury from a car accident where a driver cut me off at an intersection, I forced to see a psychologist paid for by the auto insurance company. This psychologist was bold! After seeing that I was aboriginal he said to me to that I should just get it over with and admit to sniffing gasoline because all aboriginals have done it before. He apparently knew this to be true because he came from Winnipeg. I was stunned to say the least that someone with this kind of degree, with this kind of authority, was so low in their mind as to assume that all aboriginals sniff gas. He was also an immigrant who didn’t know much about the historical issues around Aboriginals and Canadian government. Somehow he got it in his head that all aboriginals are just messed up. It was absolutely appalling and I left and told the company to find another doctor. If you experience these kinds of behaviors, report them immediately and demand to see a new doctor.

PS– another reason why immigrants and students across this country need to be mandated to study the historical relations of aboriginals and Canadian government and it should be taught by aboriginal teachers. Perhaps then we can reduce the racism and ignorance traveling through the veins of some ignorant Canadians.
