One First Nations man dead another in custody following Thunder Bay stabbing

Thunder Bay police say a 20 year old student attending Dennis Franklin Cromarty high school in the city is dead following a stabbing outside a theatre Friday.

Thunder Bay police say a 20 year old student attending Dennis Franklin Cromarty high school in the city is dead following a stabbing outside a theatre Friday.

The man’s name and home community is not being released at this time.

Shane Patrick Ashpanaquestcum, 19, was arrested a short distance from the theatre where the man was stabbed.

Police say Ashpanaquestcum, from the Summer Beaver First Nation was taken into custody without incident and that a weapon was seized.

Ashpanaquestcum was charged with second degree murder.

According to a statement issued by Thunder Bay police, authorities received several 911 calls because of a disturbance caused by the two men.

Investigators say they are still interviewing witnesses and that an autopsy was conducted Saturday but the results are not being released at this time.

Police say the victim and accused were not known to each other.
