The Assembly of First Nations hosted a special tribute for missing and murdered Indigenous women at its Halifax annual general assembly Wednesday.

The rally kicked off renewed calls for a national inquiry.

Hundreds of people in attendance donned yellow shirts and joined hands in what they called “a Circle of Hope.”

Almost 1,200 Indigenous have been reported missing or murdered in Canada over the last two decades.

The AFN says an inquiry is crucial to finding a way to protect Indigenous women, who are four times more likely to be killed or go missing.

The Harper government has rejected the idea.

The Native Women’s Association of Canada, however, says it won’t back down.
