The residential school experience left thousands of Aboriginal people with emotional and physical scars.

The statements of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission have revealed the enormous suffering inflicted upon children.

Now, according to a professor at the University of Manitoba, the residential school system can be considered an act of genocide.

Professor Christopher Powell makes the point in a new called Barbaric Civilization.

“Canadians like to think we are a moral country, that we are the good guys. A lot of Canadians recognize that the residential schools were painful, that there was abuse,” says Powell. “But there isn’t still a widespread recognition that they were a part of a systematic attempt to eliminate by force Aboriginal culture.”
