British Columbia’s Attorney General is defending the controversial decision to appoint former judge and attorney general Wally Oppal to lead an inquiry into how police handled murdered women’s cases in Vancouver before they caught serial killer Robert Pickton.

The inquiry is supposed to being formal investigations this spring, but calls continue to rise for Oppal’s resignation.

Oppal once dismissed the need for an inquiry.

“I understand that different people have different views but clearly Mr. Oppal is highly recognized across B.C. for what he has done,” said Attorney General Barry Penner. “He lead an inquiry in the 1990s with policing and he didn’t hold any punches on how policing should change in B.C.”
